Society of
Children's Book Writers
and Illustrators

About Us

Welcome. Our chapter covers the San Diego/Imperial County region and is one of the most active chapters in the country. Members come from a variety of backgrounds and range in experience from those new to children’s writing or illustrating to authors and illustrators with numerous published titles.

We meet the second Saturday of the month from September through April from 2-4 pm, and we hold a one-day conference in May from 9-5.   Due to the Covid Pandemic we are holding all 2021/2022 events from September – December on-line, and possibly return to in-person (or both in-person and on-line) starting in January 2022. When it is safe we hope to return to  UCSD-Extension at 6256 Greenwich Dr., Rm 116, San Diego, CA 92122.

Monthly meetings feature a speaker on writing and/or illustrating and we set aside time for chapter business, member announcements and networking. Some of our speakers are local; others are brought in from out of town. Every meeting is planned to further the development of our members’ careers.

In addition to our monthly chapter meetings, we host workshops, intensives, conferences, on-site critique groups prior to the monthly meetings (reservations required), help link members into on-going critique groups, and run special programs tailored to member needs.

Please check the calendar on the My Region page for monthly meeting information.

Meetings are open to both SCBWI members and nonmembers. Cost: $10 for SCBWI members, $15 for nonmembers.

Season Tickets offer automatic registration to all 2-4 pm chapter meetings September – April, discounted prices for Intensives and our all-day conference, MayFest, and are available to purchase from September through December.
