Kathleen Krull Memorial Fund
In January 2021, Kathleen Krull passed away. She was a giant in the field of nonfiction for young readers. As the award-winning author of over 100 books, she is best known for her “Lives of…” series, for her “Giants of Science” series, and for her many nonfiction picture book biographies. She has written about Wilma Rudolph, Cesar Chavez, Hillary Rodham Clinton, The Beatles, and more.
In addition to a prolific writing career, she was also a book editor who worked with Tomie dePaola, Eve Bunting, Jane Yolen, and others. Krull helped usher children’s nonfiction into the mainstream. With her witty, clever voice, she made nonfiction fun and accessible.
Krull was an active member of SCBWI. She was especially proud of the San Diego chapter and supported the chapter whenever she could. Krull has mentored so many fellow authors, providing support, encouragement, and wisdom. The SD-SCBWI chapter would like to honor her memory by establishing the Kathleen Krull Memorial Fund.
This fund will be used for the following purposes:
- To host an annual Children’s Nonfiction Conference around Krull’s birthday in late July.
- To host mentoring opportunities (i.e, manuscript critiques, workshops, scholarships, etc.) to support unpublished or debut authors who are interested in writing nonfiction picture book biographies.
Friend and fellow author, Dr. Virginia Loh-Hagan will coordinate these efforts.
For now, donors can email a check to the chapter post box at:
