Building Tension in Your Narrative

Tension is what grips the reader, what keeps them invested in the character and plot, and what keeps them reading. Writers often define their stories as plot-driven or character-driven. According to Linda Camacho, agent at Gallt & Zacker, with the latter, the classification tends to refer to more “quiet” stories. But action-heavy or not, every single narrative needs tension. Tension ranges from who’s-going-to-die to subtle to sweet curiosity about what character will do next. Tension is critical for reader engagement and in this session, Camacho will teach effective tension techniques that will keep your readers spellbound, breathless, and turning the pages.

Linda Camacho is an agent at Gallt & Zacker Literary. She moved over to agenting after holding various positions at Penguin Random House, Dorchester, Simon and Schuster, and Writers House. Linda is looking for MG, YA, and adult fiction across all genres (especially upmarket, women’s fiction/romance, and literary horror). She also has an MFA in creative writing from the Vermont College of Fine Arts and a short story in the upcoming anthology Every Body Shines by Cassandra Newbould.
