Intensives and Mentorships

Date/Time
Date(s) - 09/09/2018
4:00 pm

Intensives offer a chance to work with an instructor in a group setting and really dive in and explore the topic of the intensive. This year we will be holding two half-day intensives and two mentorships (the Picture Book Mentorship’s Intensive will be in October 2019).

Another change in our chapter is a switch from snail mail mentorship/intensive registration to an online system utilizing electronic payment. With only sixteen illustrator and sixteen picture book author mentorships available, registration will be on-line on a first come, first served basis.  After the mentees, the intensives will have 110 openings available.

Illustrator Intensive registration opens on November 11, 2018 by 7:00 PM (Mentorship is Full, waitlist available)
Picture Book Author Intensive registration opens on November 2, 2018 at 7:00 PM

NF and Biographies Intensive registration opens December 16, 2018 at 7:00PM

Drawing on Discovery Illustrator Mentorship Schedule – Nov 1, 2018 through April 13, 2019

The mentorship will provide sixteen illustrators or author/illustrators with the opportunity to work directly with art director Maria T. Middleton. Mentees will follow the Drawing on Discovery prompt below and send art to the Ms. Middleton via Dropbox. She will review and comment on the art. Based on the feedback received mentees will have two months to create final art, which will be discussed as part of the full Illustrator Intensive. The specific tasks and timeline are as follows:

November 1 – Open registration for Mentorship and Intensive
Jan 12, 2019 – Mentees Submit their works to DropBox for review
February 10, 2019 – Return critiques/suggestions on work for illustrators
(This gives nearly 2 months for final art)
April 6 – Submit finals to the DropBox for Intensive
April 13– Intensive and Chapter meeting.

Illustrator Intensive, Saturday, April 13, 2019 8:30 am to noon
The art director will review and comment on double-page spreads produced by those participating in the mentorship program. You will see changes from preliminary sketches to final art and through the process get a better sense of what works from an art director’s perspective, what doesn’t, and why. The Intensive will also include an open-dialogue with the art director – a chance to discuss common mistakes and how to fix them, ask questions, and learn more about illustrating children’s books from an art director’s perspective.
