Tiffany Liao, Editor with Henry Holt Books for Young Readers

Perfecting Your First Page

What makes a good first paragraph? How can you establish your character and world while avoiding the dreaded Infodump? Is it true you should always begin a chapter with action? We’ll look at some different examples of beginning lines that work — and some that don’t — and learn how to craft an opening passage that will hook the reader. We’ll be doing in-class exercises.

Attendees are encouraged to bring the first page of their works-in-progress.

Tiffany Liao is an Editor at Henry Holt Books for Young Readers. Previously, she worked as an Associate Editor at Razorbill, an imprint of Penguin Random House. A Bay Area native, Tiffany now resides in Brooklyn where she continues to pine for a good avocado. She (mostly) tweets about bookish things at @tiff_liao.

If you are a SCBWI member facing financial hardship due to Covid, please contact us at sandiego@scbwi.org. We will be offering a free meeting, one time per person.
